A J187 notice is the prescribed form used to advertise that the Liquidation and Distribution Account in a deceased estate lies open for inspection. The J187 notice is published in terms of Section 35(5) of the Administration of Estates Act 66 of 1965 once the Master is satisfied with the account. It tells all interested parties that the account is open for inspection and that objections may be lodged.

What the J187 notice contains
The notice states the estate number the deceased’s full name the inspection period and the Master’s office and Magistrate’s office where the account lies open. The standard inspection period is 21 days unless a longer or shorter period is specially stated.
Why a J187 notice is required
The J187 notice gives creditors heirs and other interested parties the opportunity to inspect the account and object before the executor distributes the estate. Without publication the executor cannot finalise distribution. The Liquidation and Distribution Account lying for inspection step exists to protect interested parties.
Where the J187 notice is published
The notice appears in an online newspaper that circulates in the relevant district and gives interested parties free access, in line with Chief Master’s Directive 1 of 2025. Government Gazette coordination is arranged where required. The route depends on the Master’s instruction. You can download the J187 form here.
J187 notice and Section 35(5)
The J187 notice and the Section 35(5) advertisement are the same step described by form number and by statute. The prescribed form is published on the SAFLII record of the J187. For publication see online publication of Section 35(5) notices.
