A J193 notice is the statutory advertisement required under Section 29 of the Administration of Estates Act 66 of 1965. It calls on creditors and debtors of a deceased estate to lodge their claims with the executor within a fixed period. The notice must appear in the Government Gazette and in one local newspaper circulating in the district where the deceased was ordinarily resident during the twelve months preceding death or a compliant online newspaper, like Nuusflits.

What is a J193 notice
The J193 is the prescribed form used to advertise a deceased estate under Section 29. It is not issued by the Master of the High Court together with letters of executorship. The executor is responsible for sourcing the form, completing it and arranging publication.
Where must a J193 notice be published
Section 29(1) requires publication in two places: the Government Gazette and one newspaper circulating in the district where the deceased was ordinarily resident for the twelve months before death or a compliant online newspaper like Nuusflits. If the deceased was resident in more than one district during that period, publication is required for each relevant district.
Deadlines and timing for a J193 notice
The notice must allow creditors not less than 30 days to lodge their claims. The 30-day period runs from the date of publication.
Information required on a J193 notice
A valid J193 notice must contain the full names of the deceased, identity number, last address, date of death, the estate number issued by the Master, the name and address of the executor and the period within which claims must be lodged. Omissions or inaccuracies can result in the Master rejecting the notice and requiring republication.
For the full statutory framework, see the Administration of Estates Act 66 of 1965 on the Department of Justice website.
