The documents needed after death in South Africa are not always easy to think about when you are grieving the loss of a loved one. Yet these documents are essential for reporting the estate to the Master of the High Court so that the estate can be wound up legally.
To support you during this difficult time, we’ve created a practical checklist of everything you may need. Keeping these documents together will make the process smoother for the executor, attorney, or family member responsible for the estate.
Essential documents
- Original death certificate
- Certified copy of the BI-1663 form (Notice of Death)
- Certified copy of the deceased’s ID
- Certified copies of all heirs’ and beneficiaries’ IDs
- Marriage certificate (or divorce decree, if applicable)
- Antenuptial/marriage contract (if applicable)
- The most recent original will/testament
Financial information
- Bank account details and balances of the deceased
- Certified bank statements of all beneficiaries
- All bond/loan account details
- Investment statements and share portfolios
- Original vehicle registration documents
- Current short-term insurance schedule
- Medical aid card or membership certificate
- Life insurance and funeral policies
- List of all outstanding accounts that must be settled
Property and assets
- Copies of title deeds of fixed property
- Copies of transfer deeds of property (if applicable)
- List of household goods, policies, and any assets with brokers
- Any lease agreements or rental income details
Tax and compliance
- Deceased’s SARS income tax number
- Spouse’s SARS income tax number (if married)
- Information on the person or firm handling the deceased’s tax affairs
- Proof of residential address of the deceased and the executor
Family details
- Full names, ID numbers, and dates of birth of the spouse
- Full names, ID numbers, and dates of birth of all children
- Full names, ID numbers, and dates of birth of parents (if applicable)
